Hello, you are right about the steering wheel being the culpret.Pull off the cover with the vw emblem.Just yank it off. Remove the nut,and the wheel comes right off(22mm?).I think it is under the wheel that there is a thin copper foil contact that has rubbed through.I replaced mine with a low mileage one from a vw golf convertable that I found in the junk yard.Maybe all contemporary vw's can supply a suitable replacement.I got intermittant honks when I made turns. Finally, it started honking and would not stop.What a pain.
