Most of the time, the high rpm alternator light is caused by very worn brushes. The flexible wire leads to the brushes are probably at their maximum length and the spring that normally keeps the brush in contact with the armature can't reliably do so while also straining against the short lease. The armature is not perfectly round and so it is like a camshaft that is turning so fast that the valves start to float at high rpm when the valve springs get tired. A new regulator/brush pack assembly can be bought for under $20.
