Bad bearings rumble, bad CVs clunk and bang and sometimes make weird vibrations. Squeaks are usually suspension or brakes. The brake pads can bind or get loose in the calipers and make noises as rotor contact changes. Replacing the bearings will probably fix the squeak but only because the brakes are moved in the process. Check them careful first. Remove the pads, make sure they move freely in the carriers, the springs on top are good, the caliper pistons move and there should be anti squeal shims on the back of the pads.

Squeaking noise is coming from left front wheel of my Syncro after first off road trip last weekend. I went to Assateage Island National Park and the Syncro performed flawlessly. We parked in a secluded area and the kids played in the the sand until their hearts content. The best part about it were the looks/stares from the passers by. I don't know if it was confusion or admiration or both but it seemed like maybe it was the last place they were expecting to see an old Vanagon. Got home and pressure washed the underside thoroughly to remove salt. Anyway could this noise be the CV joint starting to fail? How can I check it? Any help appreciated.
