The plastic strip was formerly installed on the windshield of the Goldbrick, but now (with it removed), it leaks in heavy rain (and has begun to rust all around.)
Most likely due to the age of the windshield rubber. It has become hard and un-pliable. A good or new seal without the trim will not leak. I have removed the trim on many vans, installed new windshields using the old rubber cleaned properly without replacing the trim, installed windshields using new rubbers with the groove and no trim, on more Vans than I wish to count and NO LEAKS ! You must have a sound, painted, windshield frame (no rust) and a good rubber seal that's the important points ! The use of Krown rust protection oil or a similar product applied to the frame and the rubber is also adventageous to sealing as the rubber stays pliable and prevents rusting of the frame. Also makes installing the window very easy !
