Well the altimeter I'm using only scales in 5 feet intervals (good enough for most things), but due to atmospheric changes day to day, it can vary 500 feet in elevation on the same location. Unless I'm religous about recalibrating, I wouldn't say it is accurate except for elevation differences (i.e. I went up 2800 feet to cross over Shenandoah Mountain, down 2500 on the other side, then back up 1500 feet to my place on the next ridge.
