A question popped up reading this discussion: I know the US and European taillights assemblies differ, but does the US version have reflectors? European versions don't have it, so more than 50% of the light is lost.

I did an experiment with a 1W Luxeon star from Lumileds, which was brighter than a 10W filament bulb. Also good visibility from all sides. But the LED itself is expensive, and a lot of work to get it in.
