The rust behind my reefer was caused (during it's previous ownership) by a broken city water connector. It soaked the fiberglass behind the kitchen unit and kept it wet every time the city water was hooked up.

I found out it was broken the hard way. Yep ... I soaked it too ... the first time I tried it. I now know to check that "Feature" with the connector pulled out from the van.
