Subject: aux fuse panel
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed

Last week I ventured up to Malahat Auto wreckers here on Vancouver Isle. and was lucky enough to finally get something I have been looking for (at a good price) for years. Its the little aux fuse panel/distribution box from late model Golf/Jetta/Beetle. In those cars it mounts on top of the battery cover.

It measures 4.5" long, 3.5" wide and 1.5" deep. It has an 7", 6 gauge wire (with attached battery connectiion) leading into a bus supplying (on threaded studs):

4 fusible links (and a blank), 2 X 50 A, 2 X 110 A!

3 spade type fuses, all 30 A.

the part # is 1J0 937 550

I am chuffed, it replaces the rather crude aux box I made from one of the ubiquitous hinged black plastic VW boxes. The new box fits on top of battery and under engine lid. I made a bracket out of Aluminium stock (1" X 1/.8), bent to act like a big flat clip that latches on to the ridges around the top of the sides of my battery, I bolted the box to the strap.

(I have my battery in the stock Vanagon diesel location, ie back end of engine compartment, rhs.)

I think it may fit beside the battery up front in other vans, but don't know for sure.

From my home made panel, i had run; an 8 gauge wire for horn and aux light (250 W aircraft light), and an 8 gauge wire to headlight relay set up, a connection to the stock main power to fuse box wire from my aux battery relay, and a Bosch power socket (same female connection type as "silver socket" ) to supply plug in trouble light.

I connected the horn/aux light and headlight wires to the 2 50 A links. The stock fuse panel lead went on one of the 110 A links, and I connected the alternator input to the remaining 110 A link.

The Bosch power socket is now on one of the 30 A spade connections.

The new box has much neater wire routing and takes up less space.

I still have to make provisions to connect (via relay) my aux battery, but the 6 gauge pigtail will make that easy.

Alistair
