Best idea I've heard all day. On the 84 Westy, the over-door lamps and over-counter lamps all come off Fuse 8 ("S8 on the wiring diagram). It's a piece of cake to pull the wire off the fuse, and re-route it under the carpet to my house battery fuse panel behind the driver's seat. Thanks, Loren!
