The best idea I've seen is the addition of auxiliary tail light units high up in the rear window. I followed a westy for quite a while up Hwy 1 near Big Sur with 'em last year, and they were VERY visible. They looked like inexpensive round trailer lights, so they weren't cosmetically all that hot, but I bet you could find something nice and rectangular to fit, maybe even with turn signals. The only downside is getting wire run to them, and the loss of a couple insignificant inches of visibility.
