Okay, that "funky yellow strip" was originally a chromed piece of plastic that helps seal the rubber window seals of the early model Vanagons. Later models changed the rubber seals, and did away with the insert.

If you remove the insert, you'll likely cause your current seals to leak (and it may not be an obvious leak) leading to rusting of window openings.

If you want to get rid of the strip, you might want to consider putting new rubber seals in (of the type without the strip insert.)
