The only way I can figure that the Canadian
Tire (we also call it Crappy Tire and Cambodian
Tire) propane gauge that Frank C. describes works
is by pressure.  But at a constant temperature,
the pressure in the tank will be the same,
regardless of how much liquid propane there is
in the tank, provided there is _some_, from 1 oz.
to full.  So this gauge will only tell you
when all your liquid propane is gone,
which means your tank is almost totally
empty!  Oops, too late, you just ran out!

I think a better solution might be the stick-on
liquid crystal thermometers used for barbque
tanks which sense the liquid level by where
on the tank the temperature change occurs.  I
