Heater cable and heater valve can be done in the driveway, but I prefer to buy parts from list vendors and let my mechanic struggle with the job. Having looked at the diagram a question popped into my mind. My front heater is always on... I assume then that this is because the cable that controls the valve in the diagram is either broken, bent, or weak. Has anyone replaced this before?
