I bought a car stereo with CD player and remote control for $79 here at Canadian Tire. Was a special for 2 days only. The frame fits perfect without any modification and the unit is 6 1/4" deep. No problems with fitting. Karl Hartmut Filc 80 Vanagon (soon to be a weekender) Life is too important to be taken seriously

i think the most standard depth of a car stereo is 7", the vanagon allows for 6.5". i might be off on those, but the difference between standard and vanagon is definitely 1/2". if you are willing to bend the wiring in the back a bit hard and have the front stick out a tiny amount, a 7" depth will fit just fine. call crutchfield, they're pretty helpful. aaron '87 syncro gl -----Original Message----- From: Robert Harris [mailto:rdh24@CORNELL.EDU] Sent: Wednesday, May 25, 2005 10:04 PM To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Subject: Re: Car Stereo Fit (dimensions) Good point, I forgot I had to file the dash opening a bit too. BTW Crutchfield lists only one radio out of all the models they carry as being compatible with the Vanagon (at least for the earlier model years). It can't be a size issue -- must be that's the only one they have an adapter to common-ground speaker wiring for?? But it's easy to run new speaker wire to get separate grounds to each speaker.
