Now that the weather has finally warmed up in the Pacific NW I am getting some high water temps in my 87 syncro Westfalia. During stop and go traffic The needle is going as far as 3/4 of the way up the gauge and then the fan is coming on and bringing it back to the top of the warning light. I just got out and felt the radiator through the plastic grill and it is not hot even when the fan is on. It is warm at the bottom left (looking from the front) but cool at the top. I am feeling the fins and the copper pipes to which they are attached, not the main pipes at the sides which I can't reach through the plastic grill. Can anyone tell me if this is normal or wether this might indicate reduced flow through the radiator. I imagine that it might be hotter if I had been freeway (higher engine/water pump speed) driving but still, if the engine is hot would you not expect the radiator to be hot? I am just about to set off on a 250 mile trip... Thanks David |
