I used two and a half five pound fire extinguishers on an engine fire I had on my Westy in my driveway putting out the fire. I had the extinguishers handy and when I heard the 'Poof' noise while cranking the engine I had no doubt what I'd find. I immediately grabbed an extinguisher (40 feet away) and had it spraying before I even saw the flames. A good supply of carbonated water in pop top cans or other carbonated drink can be a life saver too. I extinguished a 73 El Camino fire with Budweiser pop tops. As for kitchen fires the rule is; never move a burning pan, skillet or whatever. Always cover it and get the hell away. That fire extinguisher or water of anytime on a grease fire just feeds it oxygen and makes it grow.
