Instead of moving everything, sell all your bulky, heavy, non-essential items on Craigslist before you leave NYC. (Like TV's, desks, bookcases, beds, chairs, etc).

You may not get top dollar for them, but you can buy them for the same price (or less) when you get to LA on the LA edition of Craigslist (probably from someone moving to NYC).

You'll also save precious fuel dollars too.
