Jim,

I took my response offlist since this is not Vanagon related. However, I felt your posting deserved a reponse here and serves as notice that we should take this offlist.

Anyway, you are probably thinking of cars like the Puma (GTE, GTB, Ventura etc.). I have been looking at them for purchase for the past two years. Many were imported as kit cars (less drivetrain). CB Performance (known then as Claude's Buggies) brought some Puma's in under that rule. Beck Performance brought in the wonderful mid-engined Beck Speedster (?) (like the James Dean RSK Spyder) in the same manner.

As far as I know, the market for kit cras dried up from demand more so than being legislated out of existence. There are a few cars still coming here that way.
