Subject: speaking of fridges... a mod
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed

I took the fridge out this evening to do a mod we discussed on this list last year. Started with replacing a broken stock exterior fin cooling fan with a muffin type fan. Well it didn't work as well as the stock one, came on and stayed on much longer. Someone else on the list found out the same and that initiated a discussion where i brought up the idea of some sort of shroud to cover the fins and create a better chimney back there, to create better convective air flow and to direct the fan airflow.

I formed a shallow "U" from perforated steel sheeting (what I had on hand) which covers all but the top most series of fins. I covered that perf sheet with some of that aluminized bubble "wrap" type insulation.

It now encloses the fan and most of the fins. I am hoping the air, both convective and fan driven, will be directed more efficiently over the fins.

We'll see, I'll let you know if the fan cycles less often and if I notice any difference in airflow.

Alistair
