I believe you should be using the after pump metal cannister filter. Your vehicle may have come with two on it though. One before the pump with equal sized hose in and out to the pump and the metal cannister one. If you have the plastic one in line in front of the pump and it has the same size line in and out then it was supposed to be removed and replaced with a section of fuel line from the tank to the pump on its first dealer warrantee visit. The metal cannister one is used on many VW.
