Subject: Traveling lighter... a goal... Kayak carriers, Lake Superior?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Armchair paddlers may enjoy reading "The Happy Isles of Oceania", by Paul Theroux, in which he chronicles his several months spent paddling a folding kayak around various South Sea islands. I seem to recall it being a Klepper Aerius, which packs into two large duffels, and which he checks as baggage on inter-island flights between the legs of his trip. A good read if you enjoy traveling, paddling, or learning about the mixed effects of Western influence on remote native cultures.

REQUIRED VANAGON CONTENT (well, sort of): Spam, the miracle meat in a can, is wildly popular not only among Westy campers, but also with today's South Sea islanders. Theroux suggests the reason is that the luncheon meat's musky, salty flavor is very close to that of human flesh, making it a delicacy among a people who until quite recently practiced cannibalism...

"OK, I'll leave it at that since I've already gone on for far too long about something I don't know a whole lot about ..."
