Subject: Manual Vanagon Transmissions - used vs. rebuilt
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

RE: I understand that the 3-4 slider problem was finally fixed for the 90 model year.Maybe you,(like me)should keep your eyes open for a 90 or 91 trans to eventually replace the current trans. Its a plan anyway......In the mean time synthitic oil is supposed to make the trans work smooth all the way up to the end.

My question: WHAT YEARS: Any 4 spd. vanagon transmission (just vanagon correct?) from years 83-91/2, water-cooled will work in my 1985 Vanagon?

2nd question: Is it worth finding the above mentioned 90-91 Vanagon 4-spd. transmission or can a good rebuild shop "upgrade" ANY 83-91 4-spd. Vanagon trans. in an effort to overcome this slider problem. If so, what other upgrade should one have done since we're having trans. built?

My current 1985 Vanagon, 4-spd. manual, has bad syncros so I'm on borrowed time and have been for 2 yrs.+/-.

Thanks for any insights...

Larry Geogia
