I ran my Air Cooled Westy for about 10 years and 275,000 miles over the life of two engines that I built. I found that the 2000cc Air Cooled engine consumed about 1 quart of oil every 1500 miles and along with the drips from various places unseen at highway speeds I usually could consume about two quarts of oil in a 2000 mile trip. In effect my oil was self changing. After many years of taking a position on oil types, oil brands and weights, I eventually ran my 83 Westy air cooled, my 1966 Westy Splittie and my 912e Porsche on 40 wt HD oil all year long. It satisfied the highway cook down at 210-240 degrees and help oil pressure when I pulled off the highway and sat in traffic for an hour. I ran the 10/50 dino and the 15/50 Synthetic and never had better results on consumption or drip control better than with the straight 40 wt at considerable less cost. I religiously changed my oil at 3000 mile intervals on the dino oils and 6000 miles on the Synthetic oils. I got approximately 145,000 miles out of each engine and both were in good condition other than compression when I rebuilt them. I used Mann or Mahle filters on both. I see everyone referring to longer change intervals on the oil, but how about change interval on the filter? I recall when the synth oils first came out that some sources suggested still changing filters on the same interval as dino oil. Any comments? What have the synth oil users been doing?
