<<In later Vanagons, mines a 1985 1.9l gas, do you EVER have to adjust these hydralic valves? I've been driving my vanagon for years, alittle noise at 1st or with old oil, but with that 2 remedies all "appears" OK. Should I check my clearances due to van's high mileage....????? Thanks for your thoughts.... Larry>>

If I had a set of clacking lifter's as the poster mentioned, as well as a mysterious rapping, & banging coming from the bowles of the engine, I would think and have to say that it would be a good idea to eliminate this first, and would be the easiest to remedy of the two evil's.

If you have an older, early model 1.9, big mileage engine that's doing some clacking a valve adjustment might be a good idea. It'll most certainly tell you right away if the springs in the lifter's are shot. Right? It's a simple job anyway why not? Opposing flat engine lifter's for some reason don't operate quite the same as your Dad's Pontiac, Olds, Buick,Cadilac, did. They are laying on their sides they tend to bleed off faster, and don't pump up as fast. An adjustment may be a good idea for you, and your 1.9
