Paul,
The "click" in both mirrors is the clutch that switches the single motor in
each mirror into "up-down" mode instead of "right-left" mode.
If neither mirror moves, I'd expect it *not* to be the motors... more
likely the switch, or a wiring problem.
There's a (probably) black wire coming off pin 5 of the switch, this is a
shared mirror control wire (used by left and right mirrors). That's my
guess for the problem wire (or switch function), since it is used for
mirror motion on both sides.
Here's the switch pinout, colors may vary with the year, but the pinout
seems standard (and interchangeable with power mirror switches from other
VWs, mine is from a Dasher):
Pin1: White - Clutch control, both mirrors (working, on your van).
Pin2: Black/Yellow - 12V supply (working, since your clutch works).
Pin3: Blue - Left (Driver side) Mirror Control
Pin4: Blue/Black - Right (Pass side) Mirror Control
Pin5: Black - Shared mirror control
Pin6: Brown - Ground (working, since your clutch works).
The switch works by applying voltage to the motor on the selected side,
with the polarity of the voltage controlling which direction the mirror
moves. Pushing the switch left or right will make pin5 negative when
pushing one way, positive when pushing the other way. A polarity opposite
to Pin5 will be applied to Pin2 or Pin3, depending on which mirror is being
controlled.
Reversing the polarity to the motor reverses it's direction of spin,
reversing the mirror motion.
Engaging the clutch "switches gears" in the mirror, so that instead of
moving the mirror left/right, it moves up/down (again, depending on the
polarity applied to the motor). The behavior of pins 2, 3 and 5 is
identical when the switch is pushed up or down, but these positions also
kick in the clutch by making pin1 live.
