Hey Guys,

Am I missing something here. Why do you need to replace the lifters if they are not scard and worn? Without removing the head, you can remove the tubes and pull the lifter out. With a vise or large C clamp you are able to take the lifter apart and repressurize it with fresh oil. There are instructions in Bentley and in Haynes on this procedure. It appears to be pretty common if it is documented in these books.

I just did it on the side with leaky pushrod tubes on my 84. I had to replace the pushrod tubes trying to alleviate pulling the heads. I used the collapsable tubes - works good once they are seated right. I also took the time to pull out the lifters, clean them and refilled 3 of the 4 lifters on that side. Got it back together and it purrs like a taby and does not drip either.

Now the other side is noisy and I hope that it will go away when I run the van more.

Are these dealer prices? Bus Depot lists the lifters at $9.95 = $80, and the expandable tubes at $19.95 = $160 for a $240 total. I assume other vendors would be about the same but haven't looked.

I may be missing something?
