These particular specimens appear to be badly repainted; they originally looked like brushed or bead-blasted magnesium.

For the record, mine came stock on my '83 Westy. And one of mine currently rests in the weeds somewhere along a sixteen mile stretch of road made of softball-sized gravel in Michigan's Upper Peninsula...
