David Marshall is right. Price difference isn't that much anymore between Dino and Synthetic. Synthetics handle the heat better, do provide easier starting, longer times between oil changes, etc.

I broke my engine in on straight 30 wt oil, then changeed to dino 20W50. At 50,000 miles, after doing a lot of reading about synthetic ouls, I switched to Mobil One 15W50 for here in the Deep South, where it can get quite hot in summer - although with the weather we are having now down here I'm starting to wonder if summer is going to happen at all this year!

I've never regretted gong to the Mobil One. No leakage, oil xconaumprion is down, AND I rarely ever have a case of V-gon lifter syndrome clatter. I always run with oil 1/2 down on the mark on the dipstick. Above that and it seems to use oil. I never top it off to the top mark.

Regards,

John Rodgers 88 GL driver

I am thinking about changing to mobil 15/50 synthetic after reading the posts from the vanagon archieve. Some said changing to 15/50 significantly reduced oil consumption, some reported that synthetic oil is slippery, slick through tiny gap and consume more oil. I would appreciate anyone who has changed to synthetic oil in a high mileage engine to express their real experience. Thanks > >Leo, 1991 multivan > > > >
