Anything can be lubricated. Graphite, flaked or powdered, should be available at a good Old School hardware. It used to come in a plastic squeeze tube with an integral nozzle. Powered graphite is the trick lube for Pinecar Derby cars, so Boy Scout shops have it (although at about 4 times the price because they gotta get their cut). If you happen to know anyone involved in foundry work ask him for some, you'll probably get a gallon of the stuff in return. Bike shops (not bicycle, REAL bikes) stock cable lube which is composed of graphite suspended in a solvent vehicle which carries the graphite into the cable sheath then evaporates leaving behind the graphite. There is also a lock lubricant which is the same deal as the cable lube, try a lock shop.
