Bad Catalytic converter, over advanced ignition timing.. The Vanagon relies heavily on the Cat for Nox reduction as it does not have EGR. Dennis

Hey all,

I just had my semiannual CA smog check, and noticed that the NO is up from last time, and is above average for the vehicle type (vanagon, obviously :) ). I'm way below average on the other readings (O2 = .1/.4, HC = 14/13, CO = 0.04/0.05, NO = 351/466 - the */* indicates readings at 15 and 25 mph).

Any thoughts on what may cause the higher NO? Time for a tuneup maybe?

Thanks,

Joel
