Actually the cooling system DOES NOT use the same channel/duct as the AC
heat system.

my 1980 model camper still has the OG heattube front to back runs
centrally over the fuel tank
the H2o lines run across the tank top on the pass side thru a tight
opening, you can manage to slip a pair of pipes in w/o dropping the
tank.
albeit thats all you'll do that night, took some time, and great
wriggling efforts to get the 2 pipes thru w/o dropping the tank.

as for the front rad, all of the mount holes are present on the AC
models and I just cut a new lower opening, the mounting of the grill is
easy enough.

as for heat I used a rear unit from a american conversion van, has AC
and heat in 1 core w/2 high volume squirrel cage fans.  or you can use
the OG westy one from a later vanagon.

would you really want to convert an air-cooled van to Subaru?  Seems
like
there would be a lot of advantages with starting with a newer
water-cooled van.
