I installed an equus cruise control system on my '85 1.9 (vacuum type) and installed a vacuum reservoir at the same time. The reservoir is the type with its own non return valve and I've yet to have it "Kick out" on me while climbing a hill. I've had to downshift because the hill was too steep, but the cruise control was still hanging in there at the time.

A good reservoir that holds its vacuum is the answer to that problem. I agree, though, that the full electronic types don't have the problem to begin with.
