Can anyone help me find a couple of exhaust brackets that will fit an 87 syncro (I think they are the same as 2WD but if someone knows different please let me know - I have seen some different brackets arround). The parts I want are not the steel straps but the parts that bolt with two bolts onto the engine and to which the steel strap connects. I looked on the vendor sites and asked bus depot and I cant find anything.

David, the muffler brackets are different from the 2WD for the Syncro. These brackets are only available from a VW dealer, if they are still in stock somewhere, or used, if not rusted through as most are, from some dismantling a Syncro. I have never ordered them as they are expensive and it is more economical to replace your muffler with a _STEBRO/Vanagon Stainless Steel Muffler_ (http://members.aol.com/Fkc43/stebro.htm) that comes with its own integral mounting brackets and tail pipe. The cost of an OEM muffler plus the two brackets, two straps, tail pipe and mounting hardware come very close to the cost of the STEBRO/Vanagon Muffler so why mess around with stuff that will certainly fail again down the road.
