My Bentley manual arrived today, I found the appropriate section and thought the throttle switch set issue was as good a place as any to get my feet wet/hands dirty. I decided to take the van out to test the fuel hesitation on flat roads and lo - it would not start! It is definitely a fuel problem. I have it back in the shop for official diagnosis.

I should not have made the comment about the donkey.; )
