Subject: Carriage Bolts for Poptop

I want to replace the poptop and luggage rack bolts on my '80 Westy (Cdn.) and affectionally called the "Aus Haus" as they are rusted and bleeding badly. I realize that I could have the top painted but I would rather leave it stock.

I was able to acquire the luggage rack bolts and the 8 bolts (4 a side) that secure the rear poptop mechanism. All of these bolts have a slotted head and the replacement went fine.

My problem is in finding the 15 bolts that are located on the poptop behind the luggage rack and in front of the skylight. These are the bolts that secure the poptop locking mechanism and the forward arms that hold the poptop up. These bolts have smooth heads (no slot) and I've been told they are a "carriage bolts" style though I can't confirm this as I haven't remove one yet. I've tried the usual list of suspects (GoWesty, Bus Boys, Bus Depot, Volks Cafe etc.) without any luck.

I also gave the archives a look and some folks were successful with the hardware store search.

It was also recommended to me that I have the original bolts either zinc or cad plated ... anyone try this?

Any list info on what others have done would be appreciated.

P.S. I will be wandering down to West Marine and my local hardware store next week to see if there is anything that I can find there.

peace
