This sounds like the problems I was having when my Hall Effect sensor
in the distributor went south - check the plug where it goes into the
distributor, but be careful because the plastic on the plugs gets VERY
brittle with age.  Mine had broken and allowed the pins inside to
short to ground...

As others have said, it is possible for the computer to suddenly pack
it in, but I would check the distributor first.  You could also unplug
the computer, clean the contacts on the plug and plug it in, to see if
that helps...
