Topping up the tank until the filler pipe pukes gas should answer that question. What puzzles me is why you did not pull the tank out into the light of day where you would have had free and easy access to the sender instead of working on it balanced on top of a floor jack. I've proven to myself time and again that taking shortcuts like you describe most often end up being the longest way to the end.
