Shims between its halves varied the tension of a short belt from the crank. Similar to a type 1. I also switched a diesel to gas back in '98, and gave the pulley away since my ABA motor runs the pump off the serpentine belt (backwards even), Today, It's all on the floor as I switch to a TDI.
