to pinch the coolant  lines so the coolant did not drain out, then

Not so......double nut the pipe and remove  it.  Change your O-ring, put back
the pipe and your done.  No need to  get involved in the cooling hoses.  This
has been described a gazillion  time before.  Check the archives.  It's there
as often as the silver  socket story !
