I have the stock setup in a box on the bench. I'm running the single belt Rabbit pulley set. I was going to put the stock system back on until I realized that the dual sheave crank pulley would make it a PITA to get a socket on the crank bolt to turn the motor. Hence, the stock setup is in a box on the bench.

Use your idle hands to polish the front bumper or something. Leave the pulleys the way they are. The one aspect of this that Shawn didn't address is the effect of the pulley diameters on alternator speed. I suspect that that was what VW was after. We have a big turning a slightly smaller on a jackshaft (the water pump) to a slightly larger turning a much smaller. Haven't measured anything, but I'll bet the DV arrangement spins that alternator faster. There's a lot of starting load being replenished by a fairly small alternator.

The first lemming to lead his peers off the cliff is a bold and decisive leader.
