Subject: Automatic Trans Axles for 5 speed? (right side)
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed"

Hello fellow Vanagonauts,

I'm in need of some axles that are about 3/4" longer than stock. This is since the Porsche 915 center section is about 1.5" narrower than the Vanagon 091. Yes, I've got 5 speed fever and am trying it out with the TDI. :)

I seem to recall that the right axle of a AT Vanagon is extra long. Does anyone know by how much?

If that fails, I guess I can make CV spacers on the lathe but that sounds like a lot of work and I have these allergies around hard labor plus I'm slow on the lathe.

Or I think I could buy Sway away axles ($$$), or splice these with some tubing and a MIG welder, but I worry that may not be strong enough. I've done it successfully on "reality" TV but they were hollow Rabbit axles.

Oh, btw, I answered my previous question: Diesel starters do Not fit Porsche transaxles. Shucks. It does look like AT starters may fit.

Thanks! (I'm taking pictures and do hope to update the web site once it's running) -- -Otmar- (a VanagonNut) 82/86 Stretch Vanagon Westfalia GTI. "Power of two" Soon to be TDI. http://www.evcl.com/vw 1 914 EV, 1 Insight Hybrid
