Subject: Automatic Transmission Mystery Solved
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Finally figured out why I was getting anegative number (and a BIG negative at that) when calculating the end play between the final drive oil bushing and the reverse ring gear hub on my freshly rebuilt automatic transmission. It seems that whoever rebuilt it at German Transaxle had an "attention lapse" and installed hub part number 087 323 373 instead of hub part number 090 323 373. The 087 is an Audi part, totally incompatible with the Vanagon pinion shaft. Swapped in my old 090 hub and now it fits fine. Good thing I didn't believe the tech at German Transaxle who told me the "negative gap" meant I needed my final drive rebuilt! For anyone interested, pics and details of the hub mystery here: <http://bange.us/Vanagon/hub/index.htm>
