I used to have a 1980 air cooled van with the stock VW exhaust and no catalytic converter. When mine finally died I purchased a stainless replacement from bus depot that is very much as you describe, it bolts directly to the heat exchangers.

Apparently the stock '72-'74 exhaust also fits the '79 to '83 engines, but if you need the cat you need to go back to stock (though since it sounds like you don't have a cat I think you are OK).
