That's an interesting tale. Years ago when the Goldbrick's AC system was converted to R134, the evaporator was discovered to be clogged with black substance like rubber or tar. Neither the shop guys or a I could figure out what had happened. It was replaced with a new evaporator (later the R134 was removed and Duracool put in, which is what it runs today). The AC on the Goldbrick (86 passenger syncro) is awesome in its cooling capabilities.
