When I got my first syncro Westy I kept it completely stock for the first
year I owned it.  I didn't want to drill a hole or put a screw in anywhere.
After a while I said - "what's the point".  Who am I saving it for?  The
next guy?  I want to use this vehicle myself, that's what it's for.  It's
not ultra rare and irreplaceable so I may as well do the things that make me
happy.  After you drill that first hole, the rest come easy. You 'get over
it' real fast.

I find Vanagon owners value their vehicles for the utility they provide
today, not what the resale value will be tomorrow.
Of course it hasn't hurt that prices of syncro westys have remained solid
for the past decade or so.
