If the odometer stopped also, you probably have a problem with the cable, not the speedo itself. Broken or slipping gears inside the unit usually cause the odometer to stop but not the speedometer. Not much to go wrong with the speed indicator part. Jack up the front wheel on the driver's side and have someone turn it while you watch the end of the speedometer cable that connects to the speedo.
