The stock 3 way fridge setup can't and doesn't work on 12 volts unless the engine is running. It is simple to bypass this fact but without a second battery to run the fridge from the main battery will drain quickly. The wiring and relay that supports the 12 volt setting can get weak or fail with age. This should be checked out with a volt meter. I use the 12 volt setting in my 2 Westys all the time. It works fine.
