Yes, all of the factory AC vans from at least 84 on have a relay that disables the AC compressor clutch whenever the radiator temps are too high and the radiator triggers the highest speed fan. The 86+ uses a much more powerful fan motor and has 3 speeds to accommodate the heat load of the AC.

You might consider upgrading to the larger fan motor. I did this a few years ago for someone. It requires the fan/motor assembly and fan shroud as a unit. Then there is some wiring to be done since the less powerful version needs less current. The models that have the big fan also have a larger relay for high speed and this relay has it's own power lead right from the battery. Yep, it blows a ton of air and may startle you whenever high speed kicks in and you start looking for the helicopter than must be landing nearby. The best thing is to get all the needed stuff from a junkyard donor 86+.
