I tried a bunch of stuff to move the interior temp down in my Vanagon for my dog and windsurfing gear. Here is my impression of the results, yours may vary:

80 degrees out, van in full sun:

1) 85% Privacy Window Tint(medium dark, on all windows behind front doors)= -3 degree F internal temperature.

2) Installed solar powered exhaust fan (900 cu.ft./hr) on roof and louvered vents on sliding side windows (both sides, for intake, about 4" wide and 14" tall)= -5 degree F internal temperature, smells so much better inside.

3) Painted roof white (was metallic blue) with marine polyurethane paint= -9 degree F internal temperature.

Painting the roof white made the biggest difference and I think it looks the best. I did these things in the above order and still registered such a huge change with the white roof. I noticed a difference with the window tint immediately, it just felt a bit more comfortable inside. The venting had the same effect. However, with the white roof it was like, wow, I don't believe how nice it is in here!

I did these myself. I actually thought painting the roof was the quickest, easiest, and least expensive project. With some of the new high quality paints you can roll them on and brush them out and it looks as good as if it were sprayed, viewing from 12" or more away.

If you have never done window tinting yourself, its not very easy to do a clean job. I would take it to a pro.

Ben
