I purchased my 87 Syncro new. The original water pump failed, (leaker) at 49,000 miles. That was NY to Florida trip. It was replaced under warranty. The second one failed at 96K on the way to Alaska. I replaced it in a campground. There are not many sources for Vanagon pumps and I don't know of any that are rebuilt. I have seen little difference in appearance and none in performace and life is all over the place.
